Plot summary[]
Detective Abe Tamura arrives in Horseshoe Bay to investigate the murder of Tiffany Hudson and, subsequently Lucy Sable, having taken over the case from Karen Hart. He has a warrant to search The Claw for anything related to Tiffany's murder. He pretends not to have found anything in his search, though he does confiscate the skull of Lucy Sable that he found in the kitchen.[1]
Detective Tamura enters The Claw, requesting to speak to Nancy. He needs her to identify a comatose girl who was attacked before being hit by a car. Her last words were Nancy Drew. He take her to the hospital to identify the girl, though Nancy doesn't recognize her. They banter over his ability to see clues, as she assumes he isn't perceptive. He lets her go for now, but warns that if he story doesn't line up the comatose girls, then she's in trouble. The next morning, he arrests Nancy and Gil Bobbsey for possession of stolen property - an antique mirror belonging to the Hudson's. He releases Nancy after Ryan Hudson lies that he gave the mirror to Nancy.[2]
Tamura returns again when Nancy and the Drew Crew find bones in the old Fernwood Orphanage. Nancy believes they are the remains of AJ Nishiyama, though Tamura is apprehensive as she won't explain how she knows, only that it's a hunch. The group answers all of Tamura’s questions with ease, so he thanks Nancy for her hunch and leaves. Tamura calls Nancy the next morning to let her know the bones they found belong to Buddy Fowler. He had a broken wrist and four ribs from where he was beaten, and his body was full of injuries.[3]
When Bess and Ace learn that Tamura stole Lucy Sable's skull from The Claw, Ace steals it back from his office. Tamura, in the meantime, visits the Drew house per the request of Carson Drew and arrests AJ Nashiyama for trespassing. That night, Ace comes home to celebrate Shabbat to find that Tamura is staying. Tom explains that Tamura is also Jewish but didn’t have anyone to celebrate with as he’s new to town. Tamura subtly mentions bones but Tom is oblivious. Ace thinks Tamura is lying about his heritage and asks him to say the Motzi. Tamura’s happy to try and succeeds, but Ace just wants to eat. When Tom leaves the room, Tamura confronts Ace about taking the skull. He tries to lie but Tamura knows better. He becomes annoyed and demands an answer from Ace. Tom enters and asks what is going on, to which Tamura tells him everything including how the skull went missing. Ace pretends that this is a shock though Tamura is barely convinced. He threatens to search the house, but Tom refuses and tells him to get a warrant. Tamura thanks Tom for dinner and leaves. He learns later that night that AJ has escaped, and calls Nancy who is in the company of the Drew Crew to see what she knows about the incident. Bess knows how he escaped as she’s read AJ's book. The police work to apprehend AJ.[4]
In the following weeks, Tamura brings in a new corpse to the morgue that was found buried in a backyard. The corpse is haphazardly stitched together with Nancy noting how it looks as if he’s been sewn back together like a doll. She asks Tamura who the suspect is but he merely tells her she missed a spot mopping. He and the coroner, Connor, leave for a moment to discuss the case. That night, Connor tells Tamura that the body was just a cadaver that med students stole as a prank, which Tamura isn’t amused by. Nancy and Tamura banter before he asks them to leave.[5]
