Hannah Gruen works at the Historical Society. She is also a keeper of secrets and locked boxes.

Physical Appearance[]

Hannah is a dark-haired woman with an olive complexion. She has burn scars on her arms.

Character[]

Hannah is knowledgeable in the history of Horseshoe Bay, both by its facts and lore. She is shown to be embarrassed at the burn scars on her forearms, noting that she sometimes forgets to forewarn others when they meet her.[2]

History[]

Hannah was born in 1972 to an unnamed couple. On July 10, 1975, her parents were killed in a fatal car crash when a reckless driver ran a red light and collided with the family's station wagon. The impact sparked an engine fire that ignited the entire car, killing her parents. A three-year-old Hannah was pulled from the fire, though her severe burns gave her a grim prognosis of not surviving the night. The six friends who were in the car that hit Hannah's, called to the Aglaeca to ensure her survival. The Aglaeca upheld her end of the bargain and Hannah was released the next day, and adopted by the owners of the Historical Society.

Because the young adults failed to pay the toll, five of them died within seven days. Hannah was unaware of their involvement in her survival, and lived a calm life with her adopted family. She has a keen knowledge of the town's supernatural lore, which helped Hannah be a efficient owner of the Historical Society when she took over for her parents.

Plot Summary[]

A victim of the Whisper Box, Nancy puzzled through her 'perfect dream world' to find a way back to her reality and save her father. Along the way, she was attacked multiple times by an unknown being with scarred arms reaching for her through blue fabric. Nancy then put together that the symbol that the being left behind, a scorching print of a flower, was actually a combination of several parts: an anchor, a square, and six horseshoes, all of which pertained to the logo of the town's Historical Society. Nancy went to the house and recognized the blue curtains from her vision. When introduced to Hannah, Nancy is startled by the burn scars on her arms, for which Hannah is embarrassed. However, Nancy assures her that she wasn't repulsed by them, but that they reminded her of a dream that she had had.

1x18-Horseshoe Bay Historical Society

The Horseshoe Bay Historical Society, where Hannah works.

Inside, Hannah recognizes the key card that Nancy obtained from the Whisper Box, but that it belonged to Tiffany Hudson. She explains that she kept lock boxes for those who desired to keep something secret, which in Tiffany's case, was a video. Hannah braces Nancy for the footage in which Tiffany discusses her discomfort and fears about something haunting her for something else she had discovered. The video panned from Tiffany, to the shaking chandelier above, and then back to Tiffany—and a ghoulish Lucy Sable crouched behind her. Hannah explains that Tiffany was murdered because she wanted to solve the mystery behind Lucy's death. [3]

After receiving another vision from Lucy Sable's ghost, Nancy decided that she needed to go to the Historical Society to research the Aglaeca. Owen Marvin volunteered to go for Nancy, who referred him to talk to Hannah.[4] Nancy and Ace later went to consult Hannah about breaking the Aglaeca's curse on their group for not completing their summoning ritual for Dead Lucy's bones. However, Hannah revealed that, had the Aglaeca wanted to claim their lives, it would have done so all at once and not individually, excluding the idea that it had caused Owen's death.[5]

Nancy and the Drew Crew visit Hannah Gruen in the cemetery for help on getting rid of the Aglaeca and finding the sea shanty. Hannah finds a record of the shanty written by an unknown author in the 1800s. She wishes them luck in finding the record.[6]

Bess visits Hannah to get her advice on whether or not returning Lucy Sable's bones to the Aglaeca will end their curse. Nancy visits the Historical Society with an ancient talisman just as Bess enters. Hannah promises to check the records for the talisman, but Bess brings up returning the bones instead. Hannah thinks it could work but Nancy isn't interested in trying. That night, Hannah calls Nancy to warns her to get rid of the talisman, as it’s the mark of the bhoot. It attracts malevolent spirits and draws the most viscous and Evil spirits in the area to the holder.

The next day at the jail, AJ Nishiyama explains to Nancy what sparked him and his friends to summon the Aglaeca in 1975. They hit a station wagon that burst into flames. The other driver and his wife were both killed, but they pulled a three-year-old girl out of the wreckage. They felt compelled to do something and they asked the Aglaeca to ensure that the girl lived. They couldn’t pay the toll, but the girl was released from the burn unit and adopted by the couple who ran the historical society. Nancy realizes that the girl was Hannah Gruen. Seven days later, the five friends were dead. Nancy worries that AJ is going to return what he asked for - Hannah Gruen’s life. Nancy and the Drew Crew try to find Hannah. Nancy hears Hannah’s phone ringing on the ground and follows the trail to the garage where AJ is about to kill Hannah in a car fire. Nancy tries to reason with him that he isn’t a monster but a survivor, asking for the matches he’s holding. He gives them over as the Drew Crew runs over to help Hannah and they call 911. AJ, however, leaves without his talisman. He decides to let the Aglaeca come for him.[7]
